Zoute: six sales beyond the headlines

Hypercar prices drew attention. Condition, provenance and sale terms tell the more useful story.

By Supercar Collectible ·

At Zoute, the most useful evidence lies beneath the headline prices. The October sales brought fresh transactions for three hybrid hypercars and three Italian classics. Our reading at Supercar Collectible is that specification, condition and the terms of each sale matter more than a single weekend’s turnover.

Three hypercars, three individual cases

Broad Arrow’s 9 October sale returned €5,181,250 for a 2015 Ferrari LaFerrari, €3,212,500 for a 2015 Porsche 918 Spyder Weissach Package and €1,890,625 for a 2015 McLaren P1, according to its 12 October results release. These are reported completed sales, not estimates or advertised prices.

The catalogue adds essential context: the LaFerrari had a recently replaced high-voltage battery; the Porsche combined Weissach specification with Paint to Sample Sport Classic Grey; the P1 showed just 293 km. All three carried the symbol for Broad Arrow’s ownership interest. The P1 also carried the full-purchase-price VAT designation.

We regard these as observations of specific cars, not interchangeable model benchmarks. The published amounts should not be read as verified, tax-inclusive buyer invoices; their exact hammer, premium and tax composition remains to be reconciled.

Condition changes the meaning of a price

At Bonhams on 11 October, a 1970 Miura P400S sold for €1,725,000 including buyer’s premium. Chassis 4578 required recommissioning and had an inoperative clutch. Its catalogue contained conflicting original-colour records; a saleroom addendum confirmed Arancio delivery. Those details belong alongside the result, rather than disappearing behind the number.

The €517,500 premium-inclusive result for a 1989 Countach 25th Anniversary needs an even clearer qualification: Bonhams reported that its engine was inoperative and could not be run. The purchase price alone cannot establish the value of a sound, usable example without accounting for the unknown mechanical work.

Documentation is not a binary label

The 1968 Dino 206 GT, chassis 00150, sold for €563,500 including premium. Bonhams described matching engine and gearbox numbers and a mechanical overhaul, but also an incomplete ownership chain. A Ferrari Classiche letter confirming factory specifications should not be presented as full Classiche certification.

For collectors, the distinction is practical: an original specification, a documented restoration and a continuous ownership history answer different questions. None can simply stand in for the others.

Our view

Zoute adds useful price evidence, but six selected lots cannot establish a global market trend. We would look for repeat transactions, ordinary-specification cars and consistent sell-through before drawing a broader conclusion.

For these cars, the next comparison should start with condition and provenance, then reconcile currency, buyer’s premium and tax. That is a stronger basis for valuation than applying the highest result across an entire model range.
